Learning Assistant Program

Learning Assistant Program Image

Launched in Fall 2024, the CHSS Learning Assistant program pairs undergraduate students with faculty teaching key major courses, with the goal of boosting student engagement in the course material and overall learning.

Selected based on their advanced content knowledge and interest in mentoring/teaching, undergraduate learning assistants (LAs) are students who have previously completed the course and, with the faculty, create a team of teachers who facilitate a student-centered learning environment.

Components of the LA model

  • Pedagogy course: In their first semester as an LA, students enroll in CHSS 490, to learn pedagogy theory and strategies
  • Pedagogical team: LAs meet weekly with instructors to plan for class and communicate student needs
  • Practice: LAs attend and assist in class, provide peer connection, study groups, and check-ins with enrolled students

Benefits of an LA program
