Why did you choose George Mason University and your major or area of study?
I've had a lifelong love of science fiction and writing. After 22 years of military service, much of it steeped in crisis and risk communications and disaster response; a BFA in Creative Writing seemed like the right tool to add to my existing skill set. A friend of mine is a George Mason alumnus; she recommended that I see what they had to offer. The rest is history.
Are there faculty or staff members who have made a difference thus far during your George Mason career?
Prof. Laura Scott is a national treasure, a fantastic advisor, and a great teacher. She made all the difference. I can't say enough good things about Prof. Art Taylor; every student pursuing an English or creative writing degree should take at least one class with this legend. Prof. Jessica Hurley is one of the most brilliant people I've ever sat in the same room with, and I'm a former employee of both the federal government and Amazon Web Services.
How do you hope to use your degree and studies in the future?
By continuing to build on the toolbox of communication skills I earned in the military, and by publishing the handful of science fiction novels and short stories I've been working on for years but never had the under-the-hood know-how to finish.
How will the Dean’s Challenge scholarship support your studies?
It is not just financial support but a symbol of George Mason's belief in my potential and a testament to their commitment to the education of students like me. I am truly honored to be a recipient. This award alleviates some of my financial burdens and reinforces my determination to succeed in both my professional endeavors and personal passions.
