Advisor-Advisee Communication

Lists of majors and minors should be obtained each semester and may be requested from the Registrar's Office (requests@gmu.edu), pulled via an advanced search within NavigateMason, or obtained through a report in MicroStrategy. Contact our office (chssadv@gmu.edu) with any questions about how to pull your major lists.

Regular Messages to Advisees

The following reminders and information are important to communicate to students each semester:

  • It is the student's responsibility to make certain that all university, college, and major requirements for their degree are met. Students should review requirements in order to prepare an appropriate schedule of classes and advisors can provide important guidance, but it is ultimately the student who must complete all of the requirements to graduate. 
  • Students must be aware of and follow the add, drop, and withdrawal dates each semester and make timely adjustments to their schedule.
    • Pay special attention to all course, lab, and section numbers. Taking the time to do this is of utmost importance, as late adjustments will not be allowed for academic reasons or for enrollment errors on the part of students.

Advising Websites

Advisors are encouraged to maintain pages on their department and program websites that include items such as advisor contact and scheduling information, advisee expectations, major-related advising tips, and relevant events.
